Vaasan Voima achieved an excellent result in an external audit
Several positive observations were recorded during the audit conducted at Vaskiluoto in early March. These included, among other things, the significantly reduced carbon dioxide emissions resulting from Vaasan Voima’s operations, as well as the continued development work related to the thermal energy storage.
Vaasan Voima has joined the Energy Efficiency Agreement for the period 2026–2035
Vaasan Voima has joined the Energy Efficiency Agreement for the period 2026–2035. Through this agreement, Vaasan Voima commits to improving the energy efficiency of its operations by the end of 2035.
New electric boilers and a thermal energy storage
Flexible energy generation
Vaasan Voima’s goal is to use new sources of electricity production to connect the energy needs of different industries and it will do this by developing solutions based on new electricity, for example, in heat generation. Electric boilers are one important component of the clean heat production system of the future.
Currently, Vaasan Voima has three electric boilers with a combined capacity of 160 MW.
In 2020, a large thermal energy storage (TES) facility was put into operation in Vaskiluoto, Vaasa. It diversifies the region’s thermal energy generation both now and in the future. The facility was expanded through investments made in 2021 and 2023.
Vaasan Voima launched the latest expansion project in the autumn of 2024. The newly expanded thermal energy storage facility will begin operations in 2026.
Vaasan Voima to grow the capacity of its thermal energy storage facility
In the autumn of 2024, Vaasan Voima made a major investment decision concerning the development and increased flexibility of its thermal energy storage processes in Vaskiluoto. The investment will raise the temperature of the TES facility from the current 95 degrees Celsius to above boiling point by utilising the static pressure created by the column of water.
The raise in temperature will increase the total capacity of the TES facility by more than 50% to 17 gigawatt-hours. The trial operation of the upgraded TES facility is scheduled to start towards the end of 2025.
A forerunner in biomass utilisation
The power plant has a progressive biomass gasification plant built next to it. It gives the plant the ability to replace about a third of the coal used with domestic biomass, reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by the amount discharged by approximately 70,000 cars.
Almost 100% of our by-products are utilised
Significant environmental investments
For a long time, we have been investing in modern and emission-reducing technology. In addition, domestic biofuels are procured from nearby areas to shorten transport distances.
